From Prevention to Survivor: How Fitness and Community Powered My Cancer Fight

My name is April Targa and I am a cancer survivor, but more than that I am also a mom, an OTF coach, athlete and lover of LIFE!

Jan 2020 a 23andMe test revealed I was a genetic carrier of BRCA1. Family history and further genetic testing confirmed this. After much thought and research I chose a preventative route of prophylactic surgeries (full mastectomy and hysterectomy) to lower my risk of cancer. Covid delayed things a bit but I was told post surgeries, I had lessened my chances of developing cancer to 2-6%.

August 2021 while running HTC, I found a small lump on my mastectomy scar that was initially labeled a ‘cyst’.

Dec 2021 - Thanks to strong intuition and a thorough reconstructive surgery the mass was fully excised …where routine biopsy proved it was in fact a rapid growing breast cancer.

Feb 2022 - Started 22 weeks of intensive infusion chemotherapy. Following this I began a strict one year oral chemo trial drug for BRCA1 specific carriers.

Aug 31 2023 - Completed all chemo!

Enduring chemo was much like a marathon. Excellent care, positivity and determination to maintain my active lifestyle gave me strength and stamina to overcome the daily fight. This was a true testament to the importance of mental and physical wellness.

I also owe so much to the many who helped carry me through this challenging journey. The last few years have not been without difficulty but the support, friendship and outpouring of kindness and love has made all the difference. My family, friends, OTF community, and dedication to fitness were by far my lifeline throughout!

We may be strong, but we are much stronger together! I’ve grown and learned much from this experience. Time isn’t promised to anyone, live and love fully every day! Beyond grateful to be alive and honored to be represented.
